Researchers at the University of Leeds have invented a “virtually waterless” washing machine. This new machine will use less than 2% of the energy and water of the machines that we are currently using while removing stains just effectively.
The almost waterless washing machine will use less than one cup of water in every wash, so that the clothes will come out as good as dry. This will eliminate the need for tumble dryers in the long run. The new design uses small plastic granules which are washed together with the clothes and remove any stains and dirt. Several tests have been done, and they all show that using the plastic removes stains just as well as our current washing machines. The new technology removes coffee and lipstick stains just as well as a normal washing machine, if not better.
Current washing machines use up to 35 kilograms of water for every kilo of clothing that is washed. The use of the virtually waterless washing machine will save a huge amount of water daily, as well as saving on energy used to heat the water.
The new washing machine may be on the market as soon as next year, and will change the world of washing. Several billion litres of water will be saved yearly and will have a good impact on the environment.
