The Floating Ecopolis

The Floating Ecopolis or the Lilypad is a unique architectural phenomenon designed by architect Vincent Callebaut. With the rising sea levels occurring throughout the world, Callebaut has come up with the design of a floating city as a solution for people needing to get away from the extreme climatic conditions.

The LilypadThe Lilypad, also known as ‘The Floating Ecopolis for Climate Refugees’ features an environmentally friendly design covered with grass and a centre with a palm-filled oasis. The bottom of the Lilypad will be home to sea grass, plankton and other sea plants and will encourage fish life around the sanctuary. The unique architecture is designed to be auto-sufficient and is set to generate its own power and heating.
The ocean levels are believed to be increasing at an alarming rate and may increase from 20 to 90 centimetres in the 21st century. The Floating Ecopolis could be a needed solution and is hoped to become reality in 2100. The city is currently only designed to house 50,000 people, so hopefully there will be more architectural designs coming up in the future.
