Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be invisible? Have you thought about all the things that you could get up to, and all the jokes that you cold play on people? Being invisible has long been a far fetched dream for many of us; something that we can wonder about but would never happen. But is invisibility so far-fetched, or is it a possibility that it just around the corner? Scientists have now developed two new materials that are able to bend light the wrong way, bringing us one step closer to invisibility.
Scientists have created two meta-materials to develop the clothing. One of the materials consists of a kind of fishnet of metal layers that reverses the direction of light. The other material uses tiny silver wires to achieve this at a nanoscale. The development is in its early stages and scientists have been studying refraction and negative refraction to achieve the new materials. Bending light sends the light away from the object making it appear invisible. This is a very exciting project which may have immediate benefits such as superior optical devices. It may be years before the invisible cloak exists, but scientists are now a big step closer in the right direction.
